For most of us reading is a skill we take for granted. For thousands of people in the criminal justice system, however, reading a letter, a job application or a newspaper is simply beyond them.
User Voice and London Probation are working in partnership to deliver the reading plan in the community across London to London Probation service users. The programme is learner-led and delivered in small bite size chunks of information.
This project aims to reduce the social exclusion of service users with poor levels of literacy by using User Voice’s expertise in peer led approaches to provide a reading mentoring programme in the community.
Since its beginning in July 2013, the project has had a positive impact on both the peer supporters and the learners. Not only has literacy increased, most participants have noted an increase in self-confidence, personal skills and decreased isolation.
