USER VOICE response to chief inspector's comment on independent review of sentencing
Many wise calls in the recent statement by HM Chief Inspector Martin Jones CBE on the recently announced independent review of sentencing.
Suggestions to shorten licence periods and to review how recall is used recognises what damage unnecessarily harsh conditions can do to a person’s reintegration into the community.
Punishment alone doesn’t change people; we know that a focus on support in the community does. At present, due to large caseloads, too little of a probation officer’s time is spent sitting down with someone and working with them to kick start their crime free lives.
This needs to change. The system today is both expensive, and for many, unfit for purpose.
We are optimistic that there is consensus that bold reform is needed. As a key part of this the Government must harness the talents and insights of those with lived experience of the justice system to help improve it. User Voice is ready and keen to share these insights to benefit both the system and wider communities.
