USER VOICE responds to sentencing review panel ANNOUNCEMENT
Although User Voice welcomes the announcement about the content of The Sentencing Review, we are very disappointed about the gap left on the panel in relation to anyone with lived experience of the Justice system. The panel that has been announced is missing a constant in its make up, and that’s those who are subject to sentencing itself. There are some brilliant leaders in the justice sector with lived experience of punishment, and there should be a place on this panel for one of them.
The value of lived experience of those at the sharp end of the system is absolutely key in addressing its inherent problems and coming up with constructive, bold and innovative solutions. People with convictions know the system inside out, what is effective and what needs review and change. Without embedding these voices the review will sadly lose out on a wealth of vital expertise that needs to be front and centre of its work.
