Lived Experience Consultant – North-West England

User Voice is looking for a passionate, committed individual with personal lived experience of the criminal justice system to join our team as a Lived Experience Consultant.

75% of our staff have convictions, meaning we’ve been there – in court, in prison, or on probation. We have directly employed nearly 200 of our volunteers over the past 15 years into roles such as Business Manager, Lived Experience Consultant, and Regional Manager. Also many of our volunteers and our staff have gone on to senior roles in both the Justice sector and beyond.

We therefore particularly welcome applications from people impacted by the justice system along with people from a range of other groups experiencing systematic inequalities and disadvantages.

“It’s taught me compassion, integrity and it’s always kept me humble, you know, reminded me where I came from, seeing services users, firsthand siting in probation offices, the barriers they are facing, the struggles they are going through whether, it’s mental health, drug addition, losing their children, coming out of prison, or being homeless, I can identify with them, I know exactly how the feel. I have never lost sight, it’s kept me humble, because that’s always there.”

“I was a 17/18-year-old, didn’t really have many job prospects, had been recently involved in gangs in Birmingham, had lived it all, done it all and wasn’t really sure where I was going. Now I am running my own recruitment company, I employ people myself, I have offices in Birmingham, and I think UV played a massive part in that growth for me. It gave me the confidence to say, well actually just because I am an ex-offender, it doesn’t mean that I am not good at what I do and that I can’t go on to achieve things, they never put me in a box.”

“Working at UV kind of opened the door for me, especially support around the social aspect of supported housing or supported networking. It kind of opened the door as well for knowing when I applied for other job roles, I knew I was fully confident of fitting into them areas after working for UV”

“I feel at home working for User Voice as I'm working with likeminded people and they have gone through similar situations to me, and we can relate and support each other. Through being with User Voice I have learnt many things and gained in different areas such as confidence, patience, commitment, self-worth, drive, ambitions and direction.”
